Accommodation overview: Set amidst a wooded valley with a tranquil stream running alongside it, Provender House is the quintessential detached country house, the original mill stone now forms the doorstep and the pretty garden is edged by the stream. A short walk through woods to the beach is highly recommended. The pretty village of Veryan, which sits on the edge of the Roseland Peninsula is minutes away and offers a wonderful local pub serving local ales and food, a gallery and a shop. Along the peninsula visitors can find many beaches including Pendower and Carne, considered to be amongst the prettiest in Cornwall. There are also fishing villages with the day’s catch which guests can buy for that special meal or simple barbecue on the beach. The area is renowned for its beauty and dramatic coastline which provides hours of walking with stunning views across the open sea or inland across rolling fields. There is horse riding, golf and cycling within easy reach of the village. Further afield is Fowey, Truro, Padstow, St Ives and Falmouth which can be reached by passenger ferry from nearby St Mawes. The Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan are easily reached and both well worth a visit. Truro has a theatre, cinema, a museum, plentiful local restaurants and excellent shopping. Falmouth has the historic docks and is home to the National Maritime Museum, with many hands-on exhibits for children of all ages. Pleasure cruises around this picturesque bay can be enjoyed, as can kayaking, river trips to Truro or simply meander the narrow streets. There are many cycle trails in the area many of which are linked and are mainly off road. Cycle hire centres are available and it is possible to cross the county by bike, or cycle through the Cornish industrial heritage sights and marvel at the ancient tin mines. The beaches of the peninsula and Cornwall are second to none and provide the ultimate day out for little cost. Rock pooling, crabbing and fishing as well as lazing on the fine white sand are all recommended. Shops and pub ¾ mile.

Scalby Lodge sits in an idyllic location on the edge of the elegant seaside town of Scarborough, with direct access to the Cleveland Way and affording stunning views towards the 12th-century castle ruins and across the coastline towards Bempton Cliffs RSPB Bird Sanctuary. Bird watchers should note that there is direct access to Scalby Pond boasting a private hide which guests are welcome to use. Scarborough is known as the first seaside resort and has been welcoming guests for more than 300 years. It boasts two beautiful beaches, with the North Bay being popular with surfers and the South Bay perfect for a fun-filled family day at the seaside. The town centre is home to an eclectic mix of shops, a wide choice of restaurants and its very own theatre where plays by the famous Alan Ayckbourn can be enjoyed. A stroll along the esplanade, featured in the TV series The Royal and Heartbeat, is a delight with far reaching views towards the castle and across the bays. Other places to visit include the 12th-century castle, Peasholm Park, the Sea Life Centre and an open air theatre.
To the south are Filey, Bridlington and many historic homes, halls and castles with Burton Agnes Hall housing a large collection of Renoir and Monet art, and Sewerby Hall and Gardens well worth a visit. To the north is the historic port of Whitby, renowned for its connections with Captain James Cook. The town is home to the stunning abbey which overlooks the colourful harbour and marina, and is the departure point for steam rides across the moors aboard the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Smugglers coves include Robin Hood’s Bay, Runswick Bay and Staithes where tumbling cottages cling to the cliff edges. Further inland are the North York Moors, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where quaint villages tucked away deep in the valleys await discovery. Visit the daffodil fields of Farndale in springtime, a truly magnificent sight to behold.
Dalby Forest is home to the world mountain bike events and offers cycle hire with tracks to suit all ages, picnic areas with barbecues, the ever popular Go Ape, a visitor centre with children’s play areas and a very popular café with terraced eating areas - an ideal place to recharge your batteries. Alternatively, take a day out to Flamingoland Theme Park and Zoo. The market towns of Malton, Kirkby Moorside and Pickering host weekly markets and are easily accessible. A little further afield, discover the minster city of York, 40 miles, with galleries, museums, theatres and York Minster itself. Scarborough and the surrounding areas are packed with things to do and there really is something to suit all the family. Shop and pub ½ mile.

Africa Alive at Kessingland boat hire for the Southern Broads at the market town of Beccles RSPB Minsmere Dunwich Heath (NT) and superb fish and chips by the beach at the little village of Dunwich are all under 8 miles away whilst the medieval city of Norwich with its castle cathedral cinemas restaurants and excellent shopping is 26 miles. To the north of the town is a stunning coastline with the old smuggling village of Robin Hood’s Bay, leading up towards historic Whitby. Across the North Yorkshire Moors, Heartbeat country can be visited, as well as a ride taken on the steam train; alternatively the natural beauty of the area can simply be enjoyed.
