Accommodation overview: This lovely light and spacious detached cottage was once a farm steading and has now been beautifully converted offering all modern comforts. The parish of Wamphray is tucked away in this most delightful valley but is a wonderful location from which to explore the beauty of this very scenic and unchanged area far from the madding crowd. There are fine views in all directions over rolling countryside and farmland. This area offers so many ideas for great days out including Kagyu Samye Ling the first Tibetan Buddhist Centre to have been established in the West. The Forest of Ae offers some wonderful forest walks whilst the mountain biker will be in seventh heaven at the 7Stanes, one of seven world renowned mountain biking venues in the area. Wanlockhead as Scotland's highest village offers gold panning which has been popular for centuries and gold from the area was incorporated in the new crowns for King James V and his Queen, indeed, much of the gold coinage of King James V and Mary Queen of Scots was minted in Edinburgh from gold from this area, so get yourself equipped and off you go! Gretna Green, famous as a marriage venue, also has a great shopping centre and food hall. The attractive 19c spa town of Moffat is just a few miles away and the scenic route to Edinburgh takes in the town, the spectacular Devil's Beef Tub and Tweeds Well, the source of the River Tweed. The Annandale Way is a new 55 miles long distance footpath linking Moffat and Annan. St Mary's Loch lies in the heart of the Scottish Borders and is very scenic and remote with the famous Tibbie Shiels Inn a great starting point for the many superb walks. The nearby Grey Mare's Tail is not to be missed - a spectacular 200ft waterfall in a dramatic moorland setting below White Coomb. The roads around the cottage are very quiet and are ideal for cycling. We are blessed with a temperate climate here and everywhere there is evidence of this, from the palm fringed west coast to secluded walled gardens. The climate also provides tasty produce and where better to sample some excellent local food than at the many restaurants scattered across the area. Or better still call in to Castle Douglas, the regions designated 'food town', buy some food and have a barbeque on one of the lovely beaches - where there are 200 miles of coastline from which to chose that perfect spot! Property has oil central heating.

Accommodation overview: The large farmhouse is reached by a 1/4 mile private drive, adjoining the owner's house. One of the major benefits of living at Auchenfranco is its location; we feel very privileged to be there and hope you will feel the same when you come to stay. Although the farmhouse could probably accommodate twice the number of visitors, we have deliberately set the maximum occupation at 4 adults in order to preserve the atmosphere of unhurried tranquillity, with space to relax and chill, away from the stresses of everyday life. The farmhouse benefits from a country style kitchen/diner, 2 lounges all with views across paddocks with woodland/reedbeds and hills beyond. Off the main lounge is the conservatory and patio area which gets the afternoon/ evening sun, perfect for afternoon tea or a glass of wine whilst barbecuing. A short walk across a field takes you through our private woodland/reedbed (around 10 acres) down to Lochrutton Loch. The habitat supports a wide range of species of birds & animals, buzzards, woodpeckers, swallows, waterfowl, deer, badgers, bats to name a few, you never know what you might spot! There is course fishing on the Loch, free of charge to guests - just bring your rods. Auchenfranco is 6 miles west of Dumfries, ideally located for the world class 7Stanes mountain bike trails of Mabie, Dalbeattie and Ae forests, close to WWT Caerlaverock wetland centre and RSPB Mersehead nature reserve on the Solway Firth

Accommodation overview: There is so much to do here that you will want to follow our good advice and 'Haste ye back'. The Old Brewery Brae Store is a delightful listed building dating back to the 18th century. Gatehouse of Fleet is a pretty wee toon and Brewery Brae Store is centrally located off the high street allowing easy access to the many facilities on offer. Why do people keep coming back to the area? Gatehouse of Fleet is set in the midst of a national scenic area close to a magnificent coastline and surrounded by hills and forests. Couple that with a mild south west climate and at least a dozen sandy beaches close by and you will never want to leave! There are castles galore from the magnificent Drumlanrig to the romantic Threave Castle where you have to ring a bell for the custodian to row you across the water! Accommodation overview: Braemar is a delightful cottage over a century of age and in the very heart of New Galloway which is nestled in the valley of The Glenkens and surrounded by beautiful countryside. The village lies close to the Galloway Forest Park; the largest forest park in Britain covering some 300 square miles of forested hills, wild moorland and numerous lochs. The Galloway Hills are very accessible from the cottage and although not as lofty as the mountains further north they are every bit as challenging but surprisingly devoid of people. New Galloway was once Scotland's smallest Royal Burgh and is a delightful village with pretty white washed houses. To the west of the village the Galloway Forest Park is vast and beautiful and provides many opportunities for cycling and walking. It is home to falcons and buzzards, feral goats and red deer. The Red Kite Trail is on the doorstep and there is a feeding station at Laurieston. The Southern Upland Way one of Scotland's long distance footpaths crosses the park. Highly recommended is a drive along the Queen's Way a 19 mile stretch of scenic road. There is a visitor's centre by Clatteringshaws Loch and take a short stroll to Bruce's Stone. Further down the road guests may be able to witness wild goats and red deer close at hand. Take a detour onto the Raider's Road and spend time at the glorious Otter Pools for a spot of paddling and don't forget to discover the Labyrinth. Pike fishing is renowned in Galloway, especially on Loch Ken, which is the venue for many annual course fishing competitions. The village is home to New Galloway Golf Club, a gem amongst rural courses in Scotland and noted for its superb natural greens and views of the Galloway Hills and Loch Ken. Members feel it is arguably the best nine hole golf course in Scotland! The newly opened CatStrand is on the doorstep and promotes a varied music, arts and exhibition programme and offers a cinema, local information and a cafe. No visit to New Galloway is complete without a visit to Kitty's to enjoy a high tea in a traditional tea room; it's like walking onto a Miss Marple television set! Loch Ken has a sailing centre on its east side and there are a host of watery activities including water skiing. Property has electric heaters.

Accommodation overview: Pieces of 8 is a charming mid terraced cottage set in the pretty little village of Palnackie in the heart of Galloway. The accommodation is spread over three floors and is immaculately presented throughout with a cosy open fire in the lounge making this cottage a suitable choice regardless of the season. The name of the cottage is apposite as this area was notorious for its smuggling connections. Never more so than at nearby Balcary where the hotel was riddled with holes for secreting the contraband. Walter Scott wrote of the area that Few people take more enthusiastically to the 'free-trade' than the men of the Solway Coast Take assurance that your Welcome Pack will be quite legal! The property has electric storage heaters.
