Accommodation overview: Within 2 miles of three sandy beaches and commanding magnificent coastal and country views from its elevated position , this spacious, very comfortable and well-equipped detached house is tucked away peacefully along a track. Set in its own private 1½ acres of grounds and garden, a haven for wildlife, it is only a 10-minute walk down to the enchanting harbour of Mullion Cove, now in the care of the National Trust. A natural tunnel through the greenstone rock leads at low tide to a little sandy beach. There are glorious cliff walks leading to a further series of sandy beaches, or southwards through part of the Lizard National Nature Reserve, where a wide range of heathland and cliff-top plants may be seen, and sea-birds include kittiwakes, guillemots, razorbills and shags. The clear water offshore attracts divers, and surfboards are for hire in several coves. Mullion (1 mile) is one of the largest villages on the Lizard Peninsula, with shops, banks, several inns and restaurants, and a golf course; at nearby Angrouse several ancient barrows have been opened to disclose prehistoric artefacts, now on display in the Truro Museum. Five miles away is the National Trust’s Penrose Estate, at the centre of which is a freshwater lake more than a mile long, and miles of paths wind through delightful woodland. The market town of Helston (10 miles) has good facilities for visitors, including tennis courts, putting and bowling greens, cinema, swimming-pool and famous Blue Anchor pub, which brews its own beer. Nature lovers will find a great deal of interest in this area. On the eastern side of the peninsula, around the estuary of the Helford River, there are some beautiful gardens to visit. Glendurgan Gardens (NT) has a magnificent collection of rhododendrons, camellias and magnolias, as well as tree ferns and bananas which flourish in the wonderfully mild climate of this region. At nearby Gweek is the National Seal Sanctuary which cares for rescued seals. Within easy reach is Penzance, with regular trips to the Isles of Scilly, and charming St Ives. Accommodation overview: Nestling in the lush Lamorna Valley, only 10 minutes’ walk from spectacular Lamorna Cove, these two warm, spacious and very comfortable holiday cottages enjoy a tranquil, secluded setting among bluebell woods. Hidden down a track, they have been lovingly converted from a granite barn formerly used as a painting studio and stables by Sir Alfred Munnings. Conveniently situated in the heart of the village, yet surrounded by woods and bordered by a stream, Munning’s Retreat enjoys a sheltered position and with its spacious lawns and colourful gardens, is a real sun trap. Lamorna Valley, one of the few wooded valleys on the Lands End Peninsula, is famous for its pretty winding lanes, streams and woodland walks and has attracted artists for many years. The breathtaking cove reveals a small sandy beach at low tide and is good for wet suit diving. There is a small cafe serving home cooked food, an ideal stop before taking the coastal paths either to Mousehole or westward to St. Loy (reputedly the warmest place in England), Porthcurno and Lands End! There are many coves and beaches to be explored locally, and Sennen with its Blue Flag beach is great for surfing, also Lands End, the Minack outdoor theatre, Newlyn and Penzance are all within a eight mile drive. St Ives (10 miles) is worth a visit for its numerous art galleries, including the Tate, and excellent restaurants. There are several lovely local gardens to be visited and for the more adventurous shark and eel fishing from Penzance harbour, a day trip to the Scilly Isles or the Eden Project! Lamorna does not have a shop, but there is an interesting pub just a few minutes’ stroll away, as well as a restaurant with bar and swimming pool. Shops 5 miles.
