It offers first class attractions such as the Sea Life Maritime Sanctuary, the Stephen Joseph Theatre - home of playwright Sir Alan Ayckbourne - and the refurbished Rotunda Museum. Music lovers can visit the Spa Complex, home of the only remaining seaside orchestra, or Peasholm Park which offers open air concerts and a variety of family entertainments. The North Yorkshire Moors National Park is close by with its famous steam railway, which offers a relaxing ride through the stunning moorland and forest. A day out can be enjoyed at Castle Howard, 15 miles, set in an elevated position against the Howardian Hills and the location for the filming of Brideshead Revisited. Accommodation overview: This imposing Edwardian country house has been fully refurbished to a high standard and stands in its own garden overlooking sheep grazing the common at Goathland, whilst the views of moors and forest may be enjoyed from the west-facing terrace. Set in the village of Goathland, perhaps better known as Aidensfield from the TV series Heartbeat, in the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, it is in an excellent area for walking – the North Yorks Moors steam railway stops at the village station on its journey from Pickering to Grosmont.
Whitby (9 miles) is a picturesque seaport famous for its Captain Cook connections, where the cobbled streets and yards stand in the shadow of the Abbey, overlooking the harbour. The three miles of sandy beaches lead to the pretty coastal village of Sandsend. Robin Hood’s Bay (renowned as a bygone smugglers’ haunt), Runswick Bay and Staithes are all worth a visit. Inland, the moors are scattered with villages, many with excellent inns. Goathland itself offers an excellent choice of inns and restaurants, in addition to a local shop. Scarborough 23 miles. Accommodation overview: This magnificent south-facing Grade II* listed home dates back to the early 17th century and is full of fabulous original features including a magnificent oak-panelled dining room and hand-carved 17th-century fireplace. Most recently home to an independent girls school, this the principal wing housed the headmistress’ study and staffrooms. It sits in nearly 2 acres of beautiful gardens bordering a 9-hole golf course, gym, tennis courts and additional communal gardens and woodland walks. A little path through the garden leads to Hunmanby, a thriving village with several pubs, restaurants, a bakery, deli and supermarket.
The house itself is an extraordinary trip back in time – the grand hallway arches lead to a stunning 30ft drawing room with an ornate wood-burning hearth and a baby grand piano, perfect for celebrating that special family occasion. All reception rooms, including the grand formal dining room and the family sitting room look out over the south-facing gardens. Numerous beaches nearby include Hunmanby Gap (2 miles), Filey and Reighton. Scarborough (9 miles) boasts two beautiful sandy beaches, several inns and theatre with plays by Alan Ayckborn. Inland are the NY Moors, an AONB, with paths to many quaint little villages. Also a ‘must’ are Whitby (23 miles), the Esk Valley Railway, Staithe’s Runswick Bay and Robin Hoods Bay. Accommodation overview: On the edge of the North York Moors National Park, this delightful 18th-century cottage overlooks its own mature gardens in a private and secluded setting, yet is only 200 yards from the heart of the charming market town of Pickering. Hungate Garden Cottage has been completely renovated and extended to provide very comfortable holiday accommodation for larger parties, with the added benefit of a ground floor twin bedroom and bathroom with shower specially designed for a disabled person or couple. The cottage benefits from all modern amenities, yet retains all the charm and character of its 18th-century origins, with open beams and a log fire.
Hungate Garden Cottage is managed by the same team that looks after all the Hungate Cottages so immaculately . Visitors also enjoy free use of Pickering’s superb public indoor heated swimming pool (200 yards) and two free multi-entry passes to Dalby Forest. Pickering is a friendly town with good shops, inns and restaurants. From here the steam Railway runs across the moors amid stunning scenery, through the unspoilt villages of Levisham and Goathland (‘Aidensfield’ in television’s Heartbeat) to Grosmont. On the coast lies the historic seaport of Whitby (21 miles) with 3 miles of sandy beaches, cobbled streets, ruined Abbey and colourful harbour. Further along, huddled into the cliff-side, are the tiny fishing villages of Staithes, Runswick Bay and Robin Hood’s Bay, once the haunt of smugglers, while the popular resort of Scarborough is 17 miles away, offering excellent theatres, shopping and family entertainment. Situated within substantial grounds, Killerby Old Hall and its cottages are ideal for a countryside holiday whilst being less than 2 miles from the sandy beach of Cayton Bay. Guests can explore the nature reserve and lake area, walk the open fields spotting deer, rabbits, pheasants and other wildlife, or relax in the indoor heated swimming pool. The original manor house was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1087. The accommodation ranges from the Old Hall sleeping up to 11 in period splendour, with its own imposing front lawns and side garden, through to the cosy Crow’s Nest for 2 persons, nestling in the courtyard with a patio overlooking the orchard. Yard End House is an attractive barn conversion offering spacious accommodation for up to 12, including a double bedroom on the ground floor and a private sauna, with the remaining cottages converted from the original stables. Killerby Old Hall is situated between the coastal resorts of Scarborough and Filey on part of Britain’s Heritage Coast. Central, with the North Yorkshire Moors of ‘Heartbeat Country’ to the North and the Yorkshire Wolds to the West, which are both Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Killerby is within easy range of many popular locations. These include Whitby, quaint Robin Hoods Bay, a former smugglers haunt, Castle Howard, the market towns of Helmsley and Pickering, the starting point for the North York Moors railway, plus the famous twin bays and castle of Scarborough. For the more adventurous Flamingo Land, the popular theme park can be visited or the Langdale forest experience, 4x4 and off road driving, is within a 30-minute drive. Cayton is just a 500 yard stroll away with its two pubs, post office and shops; full amenities in Scarborough are 4½ miles, making Killerby a perfect location to enjoy the rural life without being too remote.
