Accommodation overview: Dunbeath is a pretty little village, an old crofting/ fishing community, birthplace of the renowned Scottish writer Neil Gunn, and has a fascinating history. The local Heritage Centre has a vast amount of archaeological and historic interest. Close to the A9, this is a perfect choice for touring with day trips possible to John O' Groats and the Orkney Isles, or to the rugged northwest coast. There is a choice of golf courses within easy reach or you can enjoy bird watching, tennis, pony trekking, hill walking and climbing. Follow the River Helmsdale inland to visit the site of Scotland's own gold rush when prospectors descended on Strath Kildonan in 1869. Nowadays, the clear waters of the Highland streams and lochs attract trout fishermen for excellent sport.

Accommodation overview: Treetops is a cosy first floor flat located on the charming Isle of Bute. The island nestles just off the Cowal peninsula and can be accessed by ferry from Wemyss Bay or Colintraive. Treetops enjoys an elevated position overlooking the village of Ardbeg which sits between Port Bannatyne and Rothesay. From the lounge window the view is eastward over the sea, with a fantastic panorama of the Firth of Clyde, over to the Cowal hills and Wemyss Bay. The small galley kitchen is well equipped. Diving enthusiasts are drawn to the area's clear offshore waters and the coastline affords visitors glorious walking: those heading south to the little town of Eyemouth (3½ miles by road) can take a boat trip from its attractive working harbour or feed the wild seals whilst 2 miles to the north lies the quaint fishing village of St Abbs and the St Abb's Head nature reserve famously provides spectacular clifftop walks. The splendid city of Edinburgh is only an hour's drive or 45 minutes by train from the historic town of Berwick upon Tweed (11 miles). Shops and pubs in Coldingham ½ mile.

The furthest corner of the country, Cape Wrath, is inaccessible by road but can be visited by a unique ferry and mini-bus tour, a trip not to be missed.
