Accommodation overview: On the edge of the North York Moors National Park, this delightful 18th-century cottage overlooks its own mature gardens in a private and secluded setting, yet is only 200 yards from the heart of the charming market town of Pickering. Hungate Garden Cottage has been completely renovated and extended to provide very comfortable holiday accommodation for larger parties, with the added benefit of a ground floor twin bedroom and bathroom with shower specially designed for a disabled person or couple. The cottage benefits from all modern amenities, yet retains all the charm and character of its 18th-century origins, with open beams and a log fire.
Hungate Garden Cottage is managed by the same team that looks after all the Hungate Cottages so immaculately . Visitors also enjoy free use of Pickering’s superb public indoor heated swimming pool (200 yards) and two free multi-entry passes to Dalby Forest. Pickering is a friendly town with good shops, inns and restaurants. From here the steam Railway runs across the moors amid stunning scenery, through the unspoilt villages of Levisham and Goathland (‘Aidensfield’ in television’s Heartbeat) to Grosmont. On the coast lies the historic seaport of Whitby (21 miles) with 3 miles of sandy beaches, cobbled streets, ruined Abbey and colourful harbour. Further along, huddled into the cliff-side, are the tiny fishing villages of Staithes, Runswick Bay and Robin Hood’s Bay, once the haunt of smugglers, while the popular resort of Scarborough is 17 miles away, offering excellent theatres, shopping and family entertainment. City of York 26 miles. Golf, fishing and riding available locally. Local cricket pitch 50 yards. Shops 200 yards.

Accommodation overview: Dating back to the 18th century, this imposing Grade II listed former vicarage has been tastefully refurbished to provide spacious, comfortable holiday accommodation for larger family groups, with several antique pieces. From its hilltop location, it commands wonderful far-reaching views of the surrounding countryside.
Halfway between Helmsley (with its magnificent ruined castle, walled garden and lovely range of individual shops and tea rooms) and Pickering, home of the North Yorks Moors Steam Railway, this makes an excellent base for exploring the area. Farm shops, craft rooms and quaint country pubs abound, with regular weekly markets being held throughout the area. The spectacular drive down Sutton Bank leads to Thirsk, where the James Herriot museum shows life as it was for the famous vet. From here the Yorkshire Dales can be toured to see the wonderful scenery shown in the TV series. To the east is the Yorkshire coast with miles of sandy beaches and dramatic cliff top walks, home to many birds and wildlife. Whitby, Staithes and Robin Hoods Bay are popular, whilst Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington have something for all the family. Not to be missed is a day at York, with its historic city walls from where you can take in views of the minster and surrounding quaint cobbled streets full of museums, shops and places to eat.
