Accommodation overview: The Auld Farm House dates back 250 years and offers delightful holiday accommodation only 6 miles from Ayr and is perfectly placed for exploring everything that this wonderful area has to offer. From a magnificent coastline, to the Galloway Forest, to an array of culture, history and the arts, to a day at the races or even a day shopping at Belfast or Glasgow. And you can fly direct to the nearby Prestwick airport from Stansted.   There are over 40 castles in Ayrshire and the jewel in the crown is Culzean Castle the former home of the Marquess of Ailsa now owned by the National Trust for Scotland. The setting is magnificent commanding stunning coastal views. The surrounding Country Park is well worth a visit including the beautiful little sandy cove of Carrick.  If you are a lover of Robbie Burns, the Burns National Heritage Park is close by in Alloway the poets birthplace. This is another top attraction of the National Trust for Scotland. Here you can travel back in time in the cottage in which Burns was born and walk in the footsteps of Tam o'Shanter to the Auld Kirk' and Brig o'Doon, immortalised in Burns's much loved tale cleverly brought to life in the audio-visual presentation within the Tam o'Shanter Experience. The museum displays the World's most significant Burns collection and the beautiful commemorative gardens are a special tribute to the life of Scotland's best loved bard.  In summer, the Waverley Paddle Steamer offers excursions around Ailsa Craig which is now a bird sanctuary. Once seen never forgotten as the island rises majestically from the sea to over a thousand feet. Some say that the most beautiful island in Europe is The Isle of Arran and the crossing takes less than an hour from Ardrossan. The scenery is glorious with rugged peaks in the North the highest being Goat fell at 2866 ft, the south has green undulating hills and pretty little villages are scattered about the island. Arran is a haven for anyone who loves the outdoor life with wildlife, flora and fauna and geology. The Isle of Cumbrae boasts the smallest cathedral in Britain and has amazing wild flowers. For the cycling enthusiast it is an easy cycle around the isle. For the more adventurous cyclist then venture into the Galloway Forest park and sample the 7Stanes world renowned mountain biking. Whilst in the forest try a spot of stargazing as it has just won an award as one of only four places in the world to view the stars so vividly.  If you are a lover of Robbie Burns, the Burns National Heritage Park is close by in Alloway the poets birthplace, as is The Brig ODoon over which Tam and his horse Meg escape in the famous tale of Tam O'Shanter.   Of course Ayrshire is renowned for its golf courses at Prestwick, Royal Troon and Turnberry but did you know there is a treasure trove of other magical courses just waiting to be discovered.  For history lovers, William Wallace and Robert the Bruce both have connections with the area. Wallace began his rise to fame by operating as an outlaw in Ayrshire and Bruce was born at Turnberry Castle.  Ayr is home to Scotland's only grade one racecourse hosting the Scottish Grand National and the Ayr Gold Cup and if you need a new hat there is plenty of choice in Ayr or an even greater choice in Belfast or Glasgow. Enclosed garden with patio area. Off road parking for 2 cars.

Accommodation overview: Nestled within the heart of the friendly conservation village of Colmonell, Rowantree Cottage sits at the end of a terrace and offers a charming holiday retreat for couples.  The open fire in the lounge ensures a cosy welcome awaits guests whatever the season, and the pretty bedroom features a lovely king-sized wooden, crafted bed with views across the valley and along the main street to the distant Galloway Forest.  Colmonell lies snuggled within one of the most beautiful and unspoilt valleys in South West Scotland where there is salmon and trout fishing available on the River Stinchar.  The stunning landscape surrounding the village is dominated by Knockdolian Hill, quite a challenge for a brisk walk or climb but often the perfect opportunity to glimpse a wild roe deer or spot birds of prey - or just to enjoy the breathtaking views across the Firth of Clyde.  Nearby is Culzean Castle and Country Park, situated on a cliff top close to Maybole and is often described as the "Jewel in the Crown" for the National Trust of Scotland.  Kelburn, Dean and Brodick are just some of the many other well-preserved castles well worth a visit.  Colmonell is also a perfect destination for golfing enthusiasts; the prestigious, championship courses at Turnberry and Troon are a little further up the coast or relax with a stroll along the beach at Ballantrae, only 3 miles away.  Ferry crossings to Belfast depart regularly from Stranraer 22 miles south and to the Isle of Arran from Ardrossan a little further north.  There are several shops, pubs and restaurants in Girvan, 12 miles away and Ayr, where ten pin bowling, sailing and horse racing are only a sample of the amenities, is 34 miles north making Rowantree Cottage an excellent base to explore this varied and picturesque part of Southern Scotland. Accommodation overview: An Caladh is a cosy, delightfully presented pied a terre in a quiet little backwater of south-west Scotland. This end of terrace bungalow has a warm and welcoming ambience allowing guests to feel instantly at home and quickly able to relax and unwind.  It is also the perfect property for exploring the diverse range of activities on offer in this much-loved corner of the country.  The area is blessed by a mild climate due to the influence of the Gulf Stream and its stunning and rugged coastline; lofty hills intercut by fish-rich rivers flowing through wooded valleys combine to make it a true and outstanding holiday destination. For Rabbie Burns fans the area couldn't be better as Ayrshire is the spiritual home of the man regarded as one of Scotland's greatest poets. He drew inspiration from its wild and dramatic landscapes, towns and villages and of course, its people. The Burns Heritage trail begins at his boyhood home in Alloway, south of Ayr and the Burns National Heritage Park provides an opportunity to walk in the footsteps of Tam o'Shanter to the Auld Kirk' and Brig o'Doon. Visitors can take an excursion on the last sea going paddle steamer in the world- 'The Waverley', or take the ferry to the beautiful Isle of Arran or Isle of Cumbrae for a truly memorable day out. Arran is regarded as one of the most beautiful islands in Europe. The scenery is glorious with rugged peaks in the North, the highest being Goat fell at 2866 ft, and green undulating hills and an abundance of pretty little villages in the south. It is a haven for those who love the beauty and splendour of the natural world. The Isle of Cumbrae boasts the smallest cathedral in Britain, an amazing array of wild flowers and its gentle roads are ideal for cycling. Those who prefer the reassuring feel of terra firma, should visit some of the amazing castles located in the area. The magnificent Culzean Castle for example, perched high on a wind-swept cliff top, is not to be missed and one could spend a day wandering and admiring the beautiful gardens including the picturesque little sandy cove of Carrick. The area is a paradise for golfing enthusiasts with Open Championship standard courses at Royal Troon. Turnberry and Prestwick. The friendly town of Ayr is less than 20 miles away. The local racecourse plays host to the Scottish Grand National and the coastline has a lovely beach with views across to the stunning Isle of Arran. Dumfries House in south west Ayrshire is one of Britain's most beautiful stately homes and best kept heritage secrets. The house has been described as an 18th century time capsule since the principal rooms and contents have remained virtually unchanged for 250 years.  By way of contrast, the nearby city of Glasgow offers an abundance of cultural pursuits not to mention some first class shopping!
