Accommodation overview: Kirkhill Cottage is located in the small village of Stoneykirk only 6 miles from Stranraer and set in the heart of the Rhins of Galloway. This delightful peninsula is both unspoilt and unpolluted which adds to its attraction for both wildlife and visitors alike. The area is thought to be the least developed and most natural coastlines in the British Isles with its spectacular coastal scenery, rugged cliffs and offshore islands. Along the shoreline rocky bays alternate with sandy beaches. This is an ideal base for exploring the forests and the Rhins, which boasts a wealth of bird life and wild flowers. The sporting enthusiast is particularly well catered for with green bowling, several golf courses, pony trekking, world class mountain biking and miles of hill walking. The area has an excellent choice of beautiful sandy beaches, notably Sandhead which stretches for more than a mile and New England Bay where early risers may catch sight of a wonderful sunrise! From the North Channel overlooking Ireland to the east overlooking Luce Bay this land offers a special beauty and in corners protected from the winds, subtropical gardens flourish due to the influence of the Gulf Stream. It is amazing to see cabbage palms and fascinating plants from the south seas flourishing in the gardens of Port Logan and Ardwell. It is an area steeped in history and the stones at Kirkmadrine are amongst the oldest artefacts in Scotland. Highly recommended is a visit to the Logan Fish Pond which was created over 200 years ago as a fish larder. There are now touch pools, a cave aquarium and a Victorian Bathing Hut. The nearby pretty village of Port Logan is where the BBC's "Two Thousand Acres of Sky" was filmed. The coastline is a sea angler's paradise with over 130 species of fish being recorded in the area. Perched high on top of the cliffs is the Mull of Gallway Lighthouse which is the most southerly point in Scotland. Take a ferry trip from Stranraer to Ireland for the day. A stay in the South Rhins is never complete without a visit to the jewel in the crown, Portpatrick, with its beautiful harbour setting and a view across to the Mountains of Mourne across the water in Ireland. Property has gas central heating.

Accommodation overview: The Old Dairy is a former milk parlour just on the outskirts of the lovely little town of Castle Douglas. This semi detached property is ideally placed for an evening stroll around Carlingwark Loch or a shopping day with a difference. Castle Douglas is known as the Food Town with around fifty local businesses either producing or selling high quality local produce for all to enjoy. This area is often referred to as 'the Cornwall of the North' due to Galloway's similar climate as well as over 200 miles of rugged coastline and sandy beaches which are surprisingly often empty! The combination of a land kissed by the Gulf Stream; wildlife galore; artistic colonies; the UK's largest forest and a secret coast lapped by the blue waters of the Solway Firth make this and idyllic holiday destination. The Old Dairy boasts a good central location; from the amazing Colvend Coast with its picturesque villages, to the Galloway Forest Park which is a haven for wildlife. The 'Artists' Town of Kircudbright is close by and with its pretty harbour and colourful High Street it is easy to see why it became an artists' colony. Each of the peninsulas has its own gems on offer; Carrick near Borgue; the Isle of Whithorn on the Machars and Scotland's most southerly point, the Mull of Galloway in the Rhins. The open gardens are glorious and a testament to the mild climate. Logan Botanic Gardens has flourishing plants from the South Seas and Threave Gardens are a mass of colour. The romantic Threave Castle is only accessed by water and a custodian rows you across! The region has many connections with fame from Robert Burns to David Coulthard to Thomas Carlyle and Thomas Telford. The latest acclaim is achieving an award for one of only four places in the World to view the night sky so clearly and you have to travel considerably further to see the other three places as they are all in North America - so bring your binoculars! Visitors also enjoy this area to sample the World class mountain biking at the 7Stanes which is guaranteed to thrill. Laggan Outdoor Centre is also designed for the adrenalin junkies with mountain balling! The Galloway Forest is also a place of great peace and tranquillity and has mile after mile of forest tracks, moorland, lochs and challenging hills. It is home to otters and deer and red kites and buzzards and red squirrels and the very lucky may spot a golden eagle! Property has oil central heating.

The open fire in the lounge ensures a cosy welcome awaits guests whatever the season, and the pretty bedroom features a lovely king-sized wooden, crafted bed with views across the valley and along the main street to the distant Galloway Forest. Accommodation overview: The large farmhouse is reached by a 1/4 mile private drive, adjoining the owner's house. One of the major benefits of living at Auchenfranco is its location; we feel very privileged to be there and hope you will feel the same when you come to stay. Although the farmhouse could probably accommodate twice the number of visitors, we have deliberately set the maximum occupation at 4 adults in order to preserve the atmosphere of unhurried tranquillity, with space to relax and chill, away from the stresses of everyday life. The farmhouse benefits from a country style kitchen/diner, 2 lounges all with views across paddocks with woodland/reedbeds and hills beyond. Off the main lounge is the conservatory and patio area which gets the afternoon/ evening sun, perfect for afternoon tea or a glass of wine whilst barbecuing. A short walk across a field takes you through our private woodland/reedbed (around 10 acres) down to Lochrutton Loch. The habitat supports a wide range of species of birds & animals, buzzards, woodpeckers, swallows, waterfowl, deer, badgers, bats to name a few, you never know what you might spot! There is course fishing on the Loch, free of charge to guests - just bring your rods. Auchenfranco is 6 miles west of Dumfries, ideally located for the world class 7Stanes mountain bike trails of Mabie, Dalbeattie and Ae forests, close to WWT Caerlaverock wetland centre and RSPB Mersehead nature reserve on the Solway Firth
