Within easy reach are Inverewe Gardens, Beinn Eighe Nature reserve and the Torridon mountains, popular with walkers and climbers.

This is excellent walking cycling and climbing country (the south ridge of Glen Shiel has no less than five munros – hills over 3000 ft) affording magnificent views of Loch Duich the Five Sisters of Kintail and famous Eilean Donan Castle which is surrounded by majestic scenery and is one of the most visited and important attractions in the Scottish Highlands.There are several National Trust properties in the region including Plockton a delightful village much loved by artists and which lies within an easy drive as does Glenelg home to a country inn providing good food and the seasonal ferry to the Isle of Skye. Here visitors can discover the Isle's stunning landscape of rugged mountains tumbling rivers and spectacular coastline that is home to bountiful wildlife fine museums and craft centres. A shop post office and pub serving food can be found in Shiel Bridge 5 miles.

Accommodation overview: Killearn, a semi-detached former fisherman's cottage, has been lovingly extended to offer a very spacious, bright holiday home, which is warm, welcoming and has all the amenities of home. There are stunning views over the harbour and across the Dornoch Firth. Sliding doors in the dining room open onto the patio and walled garden, a perfect suntrap, with garden furniture and a barbecue. The children's playground and the beach are just steps away.
Killearn is centrally located in the charming village of Portmahomack. The 'Port', as it is affectionately known to the locals, dates back to the Vikings and Picts and has a long fishing history. Small local fishing boats still share the waters with sailboats, windsurfers and, quite often, pods of dolphins. There are two small hotels as well as an excellent seafood restaurant. The crescent-shaped sandy beach is a playground for children and the local 9-hole golf course welcomes visitors, but for those who want to venture further, Tain Golf Course and Royal Dornoch are just a short drive away. Portmahomack is an ideal base for exploring the nearby Tarbet Ness Lighthouse, Tarbet Discovery Centre and the work of local potters and weavers. The world famous Glenmorangie Distillery is only 15 minutes away. Inverness is 50 mins by car. For a day trip, head north to John O'Groats or across to the West Coast.

Set back off the main road, the cottage is in the heart of the small village from where visitors can enjoy peaceful walks surrounded by unspoilt scenery. There is an abundance of birds and wildlife in the area which has a beautiful coastline with safe sandy beaches and coves. Picturesque Gruinard Bay nearby is popular with artists and photographers. The road south passes through magnificent scenery to the famous Inverewe Gardens (9 miles) and on to Gairloch which offers boat trips, sailing, golf and a fascinating Heritage Museum. A trip eastwards could take you to Ullapool for the day. Laide itself is a haven of peace and tranquillity for a relaxing break.
