Accommodation overview: It is hard to believe that Canongate Cottage, a delightful mid-terraced Victorian cottage, is so close to the thriving little market town of Newton Stewart. This location is a gem; a quiet backwater away from the main thoroughfare, close to the River Cree (renowned for its salmon fishing!) and the King George V Suspension Bridge and yet the many facilities of the town are within walking distance! Newton Stewart is truly the gateway to the magnificent Galloway Hills which are set around and within the largest forest park in Britain covering some 300 square miles of forest, moorland, lochs and peaks. Add to that over 200 miles of coastline, stunning, quiet sandy beaches, a climate which is touched by the Gulf Stream and it all adds up to a little piece of paradise!

Accommodation overview: This lovely light and spacious detached cottage was once a farm steading and has now been beautifully converted offering all modern comforts. The parish of Wamphray is tucked away in this most delightful valley but is a wonderful location from which to explore the beauty of this very scenic and unchanged area far from the madding crowd. There are fine views in all directions over rolling countryside and farmland. This area offers so many ideas for great days out including Kagyu Samye Ling the first Tibetan Buddhist Centre to have been established in the West. The Forest of Ae offers some wonderful forest walks whilst the mountain biker will be in seventh heaven at the 7Stanes, one of seven world renowned mountain biking venues in the area. Wanlockhead as Scotland's highest village offers gold panning which has been popular for centuries and gold from the area was incorporated in the new crowns for King James V and his Queen, indeed, much of the gold coinage of King James V and Mary Queen of Scots was minted in Edinburgh from gold from this area, so get yourself equipped and off you go! Gretna Green, famous as a marriage venue, also has a great shopping centre and food hall. The attractive 19c spa town of Moffat is just a few miles away and the scenic route to Edinburgh takes in the town, the spectacular Devil's Beef Tub and Tweeds Well, the source of the River Tweed. The Annandale Way is a new 55 miles long distance footpath linking Moffat and Annan. St Mary's Loch lies in the heart of the Scottish Borders and is very scenic and remote with the famous Tibbie Shiels Inn a great starting point for the many superb walks. The nearby Grey Mare's Tail is not to be missed - a spectacular 200ft waterfall in a dramatic moorland setting below White Coomb. The roads around the cottage are very quiet and are ideal for cycling. We are blessed with a temperate climate here and everywhere there is evidence of this, from the palm fringed west coast to secluded walled gardens. The climate also provides tasty produce and where better to sample some excellent local food than at the many restaurants scattered across the area. Or better still call in to Castle Douglas, the regions designated 'food town', buy some food and have a barbeque on one of the lovely beaches - where there are 200 miles of coastline from which to chose that perfect spot! Property has oil central heating.

Accommodation overview: Because of its remoteness the Galloway Forest Park has been awarded the status of being one of only four Dark Sky Parks in the western world and so nowhere else in Europe can you stand in awe and amazement and see shooting stars and the Milky Way. There are over 200 miles of coastline from rugged cliff tops to sandy beaches often empty of all but a few oyster catchers. If you are lucky you may spot dolphins, mink whales and otters. As you can imagine from an area largely surrounded by the sea we have a good selection of seafood on offer. The public gardens here are a testament to our climate and never more in evidence than at Logan Botanic Gardens where plants from the South Seas flourish thanks to our coast being kissed by the Gulf Stream. The lovely little harbour town of Kirkcudbright is known as the Artists Town and when you visit the historic High Street with its brightly painted houses and secret pends and wynds it is easy to see why. The town has long associations as a colony for artists and is often compared with St Ives and Newlyn. At whatever time of the year you choose to visit there is generally something going on from the highly acclaimed Spring Fling, colourful jazz festivals, the Kirkcudbright Tattoo, the Country and Western Music Festival to the Wickerman Festival. Not forgetting the various events at Wigtown, Scotland's National Book Town and Castle Douglas, the designated Food Town.

Accommodation overview: The large farmhouse is reached by a 1/4 mile private drive, adjoining the owner's house. One of the major benefits of living at Auchenfranco is its location; we feel very privileged to be there and hope you will feel the same when you come to stay. Although the farmhouse could probably accommodate twice the number of visitors, we have deliberately set the maximum occupation at 4 adults in order to preserve the atmosphere of unhurried tranquillity, with space to relax and chill, away from the stresses of everyday life. The farmhouse benefits from a country style kitchen/diner, 2 lounges all with views across paddocks with woodland/reedbeds and hills beyond. Off the main lounge is the conservatory and patio area which gets the afternoon/ evening sun, perfect for afternoon tea or a glass of wine whilst barbecuing. A short walk across a field takes you through our private woodland/reedbed (around 10 acres) down to Lochrutton Loch. The habitat supports a wide range of species of birds & animals, buzzards, woodpeckers, swallows, waterfowl, deer, badgers, bats to name a few, you never know what you might spot! There is course fishing on the Loch, free of charge to guests - just bring your rods. Auchenfranco is 6 miles west of Dumfries, ideally located for the world class 7Stanes mountain bike trails of Mabie, Dalbeattie and Ae forests, close to WWT Caerlaverock wetland centre and RSPB Mersehead nature reserve on the Solway Firth

Accommodation overview: The Old Dairy is a former milk parlour just on the outskirts of the lovely little town of Castle Douglas. This semi detached property is ideally placed for an evening stroll around Carlingwark Loch or a shopping day with a difference. Castle Douglas is known as the Food Town with around fifty local businesses either producing or selling high quality local produce for all to enjoy. This area is often referred to as 'the Cornwall of the North' due to Galloway's similar climate as well as over 200 miles of rugged coastline and sandy beaches which are surprisingly often empty! The combination of a land kissed by the Gulf Stream; wildlife galore; artistic colonies; the UK's largest forest and a secret coast lapped by the blue waters of the Solway Firth make this and idyllic holiday destination. The Old Dairy boasts a good central location; from the amazing Colvend Coast with its picturesque villages, to the Galloway Forest Park which is a haven for wildlife. The 'Artists' Town of Kircudbright is close by and with its pretty harbour and colourful High Street it is easy to see why it became an artists' colony. Each of the peninsulas has its own gems on offer; Carrick near Borgue; the Isle of Whithorn on the Machars and Scotland's most southerly point, the Mull of Galloway in the Rhins. The open gardens are glorious and a testament to the mild climate. Logan Botanic Gardens has flourishing plants from the South Seas and Threave Gardens are a mass of colour. The romantic Threave Castle is only accessed by water and a custodian rows you across! The region has many connections with fame from Robert Burns to David Coulthard to Thomas Carlyle and Thomas Telford. The latest acclaim is achieving an award for one of only four places in the World to view the night sky so clearly and you have to travel considerably further to see the other three places as they are all in North America - so bring your binoculars! Visitors also enjoy this area to sample the World class mountain biking at the 7Stanes which is guaranteed to thrill. Laggan Outdoor Centre is also designed for the adrenalin junkies with mountain balling! The Galloway Forest is also a place of great peace and tranquillity and has mile after mile of forest tracks, moorland, lochs and challenging hills. It is home to otters and deer and red kites and buzzards and red squirrels and the very lucky may spot a golden eagle! Property has oil central heating.
